Make them Understand the Sitemap!

For Illustrative Purposes Only...  Lorem Ipsum...
When starting any interactive project after I've outlined the goals, objectives, assumptions, requirements, and users I typically bring the fun with the sitemap (no kidding, right?) and then head on to wireframes.  I typically present the sitemap and wireframes to my clients at the same time.  Clients usually gloss over the sitemap and want to hurry to get to the wireframes.  And this is a problem.  Most of the questions I get during the wireframe discussion or even after wireframe approval are usually about the sitemap.  Questions such as:
  • Will there be a listing page or will the user go straight to the products?
  • Will the home page change if I click on the menu?
  • What do you mean by sub-category?
Knowing that I need to do a better job explaining the sitemap and the overall site organization I have begun experimenting with new formats for presenting the sitemap.  I have tried a stage approach with each level of navigation.  I have even drawn it on a whiteboard.  Both of these methods have improved understanding but I know I could still improve.  Any ideas out there??
